The Shiawassee Community Foundation is proud to announce the establishment of the Kelly Mahar Memorial Fund, a new scholarship fund created by Kelly’s family to honor his life, legacy, and deep roots in the Byron community.
Kelly Mahar was a proud graduate of Byron High School, Class of 1996. During his time there, he was an active member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), developing a love for agriculture and community that he carried with him throughout his life. After high school, Kelly continued his education at Michigan State University and spent most of his career working at the family business—Mahar’s Greenhouses. It was here that Kelly truly shined. Known for his vast knowledge of horticulture, tireless work ethic, and warm, welcoming smile, Kelly became a beloved figure in the community. Many remember visiting the greenhouse and being greeted by his kind spirit and genuine passion for his work.
Tragically, Kelly passed away in a farm accident on May 15, 2023, at the age of 45. His loss was deeply felt by all who knew him. In response, his family chose to celebrate his life in a way that reflects the values he held dear—through education, service, and generosity.
The Kelly Mahar Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to graduating seniors from Byron High School who plan to attend college or a trade school. To be eligible, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate civic responsibility, compassion for others, and strong moral character. While FFA membership is preferred, it is not required. Financial need will also be taken into consideration during the selection process.
This fund is more than just a scholarship—it’s a way to continue Kelly’s legacy of kindness, hard work, and community involvement. By supporting this fund, you are helping future generations of Byron students grow and thrive, just as Kelly would have wanted.
If you would like to contribute to the Kelly Mahar Memorial Fund, donations can be made payable to the Shiawassee Community Foundation, with “Kelly Mahar Fund” noted in the memo line. Every gift, no matter the size, helps keep Kelly’s spirit alive in the lives of local students.
